In Denmark, an angling license is mandatory. All persons between the ages of 18 and 65 who want to fish in fresh or salt water must hold a valid license. You may buy a license for a day, one week or an entire year. Fishing in commercial waters like Put & Take lakes, however, is exempt from this requirement. Odense Fjord is a veritable magnet for thousands of sea trout making their way each year up into the streams of Fyn to spawn and then return to the sea once the honeymoon is over. It used to be completely legal for commercial and semi-professional fishermen to place kilometres of nets in the inlet, turning the sea trout’s migrations to and from the rivers into a real obstacle course. That is in the past now. New rules – Odense Fjord Conservation – from 2014 have given the sea trout a special status in Odense Fjord. Accordingly, the inner section of Odense Fjord, the Inderfjord (inner inlet), has to be completely free of nets for 6½ months of the year: from 1st December to 15th May. For the rest of the time, fishing is only permissible using traps and special flounder nets designed primarily to catch flatfish. What anglers need to bear in mind is that fishing in the Inderfjord (inner inlet) is not permitted from 1st October up to and including the first Friday of March. In addition to the 5 months when fishing is not allowed, throughout Odense Fjord, the minimum size for sea trout is 45 centimetres. That is 5 centimetres longer than the 40 centimetres otherwise applicable along the Danish coasts. Altogether, this means that more sea trout will survive and be able to grow bigger; this contributes to healthy sea-trout stocks as well as wonderful sea trout fishing in the inlet and elsewhere.
There are protected conservation zones outside many streams and creeks where they flow into the sea or an inlet. Here, fishing with rods or nets is prohibited because the sea trout need to be able to migrate freely to and from the rivers in connection with spawning. In most cases, you are not allowed to fish within 500 metres along the coast on either side of the estuary. If the river is more than 2 metres wide, this conservation measure applies all year round. If the mouth of the river is less than 2 metres wide, the conservation zone applies during the period 16th September to 15th March.
You can fish for sea trout in the sea all year round, but coloured fish, i.e. fish in their spawning colours, must be released immediately, as gently as possible, in the period from 16th November to 16th January (both dates inclusive). During this period, you can only take home silvery sea trout with loose scales. There is no closed season for rainbow trout.
